The Saihai was one of the most vital tools for any samurai officer, serving as a baton of command and symbolizing authority and responsibility. Originating during the Kamakura Period (1185-1333 A.D.), the saihai was essential for high-ranking samurai to direct troops on and off the battlefield. Made of a lacquered wooden baton with hair, leather, or lacquered paper at the end, it emphasized command, similar to the Gunbai (war fan). Often passed from father to son, the saihai’s function evolved during the Edo Period, becoming an accessory to wear with the armor as a symbol of rank and power.
