The Ii Clan became legendary with the help of Ii Naomasa (井伊 直政, March 4, 1561 – March 24, 1602). Naomasa was a general under the Sengoku Period daimyo. Later with the shogun, Tokugawa Ieyasu. A great leader, he is regarded as one of the Four Guardians of the Tokugawa along with Honda Tadakatsu, Sakakibara Yasumasa, and Sakai Tadatsugu.  He was known as a fierce warriors of the Tokugawa. Because of the Ii Clan’s use of shu urushi nuri (vermilion-lacquer) they were known as the “Akai Oni” (Red Devils).
Following the Gendai armor crafting tradition, the 3 different plates are hand cut and riveted together to form the hachi (bowl) section of the kabuto. Each of the plates for the shikoro are hand cut.  The shikoro is hand laced in odoshi sugake (simple hang) with care and attention to detail.  Finally, the ukebari (helmet lining) is carefully fitted to the inside of the hachi (bowl of helmet) to finish it out.  The hanbo (chin / cheek armor) is finished using the same odoshi sugake (simple lacing) on the tare (throat guard). It features the common mengu (facial armor) used by samurai in combat. The chin of this hanbo is embossed with the Ii clan’s mon.
