Stand at the Spear’s Edge
The Hokosaki no Kiba Taisho Yoroi, Tip of the Spear, is forged for the Taisho kibamusha (mounted Samurai warrior) who rides at the very front of the samurai advance. This is Taisho class samurai armor born from the violent clarity of the Sengoku battlefield, where rank meant nothing if you could not hold the line at the moment of collision. When the spear wall met the charge, the outcome was decided in heartbeats.
Hokosaki no Kiba is a poetic metaphor, the Fang of the Spearpoint. It is the sharpened edge that strikes first. The deadliest inch of steel. Not the shaft. Not the banner. The point. In battle, it describes the vanguard, the fiercest warrior who breaks hesitation and forces momentum forward.
At its core stands a powerful pigeon chested roku mai dō (six section cuirass), a defining feature of transitional tōsei gusoku (modern armor), developed as warfare evolved and teppō (matchlock firearms) entered the field. Six articulated plates create strength without stiffness, allowing decisive movement in saddle or on foot.
Above it rests a smooth zunari kabuto (head shaped helmet), reinforced with sword tip shaped kengyō fukigaeshi (angled turnbacks) and fierce embossed uchimayu (raised eyebrows). The silhouette is deliberate, controlled, predatory.
The battle seasoned hanbō (half mask) leaves the face open for breath and full vision, favored by hardened samurai who wanted unhindered breath and full vision during combat. The sculpted ago hige (imperial style goatee beard) signals authority without ornament.
Hinged tsubo sode (curved shoulder guards) are paired with detachable hinged watagami (shoulder straps), reinforced by kobire (large half moon plates attached by hinge), a configuration seen in Yukinoshita dō and Sendai dō styles, offering exceptional shoulder mobility and layered defense. Many parts of this yoroi (samurai armor) are hinged and laced instead of riveted, so parts could be quickly repaired / replaced between battles, without decommissioning the entire armor piece.
The arms are protected by sanbon zutsu gote (three segmented tubular arm guards). The thighs are secured with hōdō haidate (apron style thigh armor), featuring ito mono plating at the top and three articulated panels of kiritsuke kozane (simulated lamellar scales), strengthening the knees for mounted impact. Below, roppon shino zutsu suneate (six plate greaves) anchor the stance with disciplined durability.
This Taisho class samurai armor is not ceremonial. It is for the man who absorbs the first arrows, who feels steel first, who carries morale on his shoulders and drives the line forward.
