Kusari Obi (iron chain mail armor belt), is a sash or “cummerbund” like armored belt, worn to protect the hip / stomach area of the warrior. The kusari obi, or Samurai chainmail armor belt, features a top layer of kusari, which is a traditional style of Japanese butted chain mail, which was very common throughout out the Sengoku Era (medieval era) of Japan. Under the kusari, there is a thick layer of asa (hemp linen), backed by another thick layer of asa. Upon request via the options above, we can add a layer of padding for extra protection. Because kusari is considered light defense and butted mail can split when struck, we also offer the traditional option to have the kusari to be sewn inside the belt, between the 2 layers of asa. This helps keep the kusari from splitting when struck and will reduce the chances of oxidation if struck. This creates multiple layers of protection for the samurai warrior that will protect against slashing weapons without hindering mobility.
The kusari armor belt will protect against slashing of edged weapons and can help resist thrusts as well. It can be worn over or under the urugi ito (lacing that attaches the kusazuri or gessan to the do). Wearing over the odoshi (lacing) protects it from being cut while in combat. Above or below, the kusari armor belt is an auxiliary or under armor which protects the “gap” in the samurai armor waist area. As it is believed shinobi (ninja) utilized light, flexible armor, it is likely that this style of chainmail belt, with the chainmail sewn to the inside, would had been used as shinobi armor. This traditional auxiliary armor saved the lives of many samurai warriors and makes a great addition to any armor collection, or used by martial artist, historical re-enactor, LARP, SCA or cosplay use. And of course keeping with tradition, the armor crafters at Iron Mountain Armory are happy to customize your kusari obi as needed via any of the options above. The under armor belt is also available in a kikko gane obi.
