Sogonari Kabuto (Sogo-Nari “Haired Helmet”) is a unique style of samurai kabuto (helmet) which is covered with hair. The sogonari kabuto or “haired helmet” was often made from a zunari kabuto and became popular during the Momoyama period (1568 ~ 1600).  The addition of the hair added character to what was a very common kabuto style of that time.  Like the personality of each samurai the type of hair, length, style and color would vary.  Although yak hair seems to be the most common for sogo-nari kabuto, horse hair could also be used; although it was typically the short hair which was shed or brushed from the horse.  Even fur from kuma (bear) and usagi (rabbit) have been used as well.  The samurai’s armor set might be trimmed in the hair or fur as well and even the entire suit could be covered to match the kabuto, however, this was rare.

The highly skilled Katchû-shi (Japanese Armorers) of the Iron Mountain Armory crafts this kabuto by hand and meticulously glues the hair to the surface of the kabuto, layer, by layer. Needing to let each layer dry before starting the next layer.  The dedication and attention of detail to this process is very important to make for a natural look and feel to the hair.  The hair length is standard and of course you can cut it to your desired length and style it as you like.
