Description
Tanko Armor was the first style of iron armor that appeared in Japan during the 4th century A.D. It was worn by the foot soldiers and had a distinctive lamellar (layered) construction. This Do (cuirass or chest armor), featured layers of ita mono (iron) which was attached to an iron frame. First using leather strips, and later with rivets. This pre-samurai armor was the first of its kind to be constructed completely of iron plates connected together by leather thongs and later cotton.
The older tanko armor opened in the front of the body and then tied together. In order to wear the armor the warrior would have to stretch the cuirass apart. It required physical strength and sometimes several assistants. Later this problem was resolved by splitting the armor along the sides and adding a hinge so it could be opened and closed with more ease. The kusazuri (bell-like defensive skirt) was added to protect the lower body and thighs of the warrior. Watagami. Shoulder straps, were also added to help distribute the weight of the armor onto the shoulders. It also added more protection. Forearms were protected by a tube-like kote, which was often made from leather or iron.
