Description
Gawa Samurai Armor (or Kon Gawa, meaning black leather) features a layer of kawa (leather or hide) that is added over the steel okegawa Do (samurai cuirass). This adds an extra layer of detail to the suit of armor, as well as protecting its steel plates from scratching and exposure to the elements, specifically in cold, wet climates. With any yoroi (samurai armor), it is quite expensive and as a matter of pride, upkeep was quite important. The added layer of kawa (leather) also makes it easier and more economical to decorate, prevent scratching, and weathering to a samurai’s yoroi. Gawa Yoroi
