Tate Hagi Okegawa Tosei Taisho Yoroi

Tate Hagi Okegawa samurai yoroi is a tosei do (modern cuirass) consisting of tate hagi (vertical plates), instead of the yokohagi (horizontal plates) seen for many tosei samurai armor sets.  Also sometimes referred to as a “kanto-do” the hagi okegawa do was based on of the yukinoshita do, popularized by the Date clan in Sendai, of northern Japan.  However, it was not exclusive to Date samurai clan.

As metal work techniques developed, largely due to European influence, the larger vertical plates of tate hagi do became more popular. The wider plating also provided more variety and option for customization of the samurai’s do (cuirass).
