Description

Aigote (i-go-te) are kote (籠手, armored sleeves) which are connected and worn like a jacket.  This makes for a more comfortable and form fitting kote that doesn’t need to be tied to the do (cuirass). This helps to prevent the kote from sagging if worn without a do to help support them.  The material that connects the 2 sleeves together are fitted with grommets and cotton cord, just like the inside of the kote, so it can be adjusted for different fitting.  This is great for clients who want to be able to adjust the fitting of their kote as they like or if several people will be training in the kote.  Although not traditional, we suggest replacing the cotton cord with a nylon cord, so the kote’s back will stretch and contract as needed.

Kote are one of the three principle parts of the armor (called Sangu), that protected the extremities of the samurai while in combat. Kote typically extended from the shoulder to the first knuckle. There are many different styles of kote which generally consist of steel plates connected to kusari (iron chain-mail) and, sewn together in several layers of material (hemp or silk). Iron Mountain Armory is happy to craft your kote using any of the above style options. If your wanting a different style, please contact us with pictures and details for a proper quote.

To learn more about the unique history and development of Sangu armor like the Kote, you can read more in our blog articleAbout Sangu and Sode Armor Parts.”

  1. These armored sleeves are very cool. I love the multitude of styles and colors that allow you to fully customize them to fit one’s individual style.
They are easy and comfortable to wear. Adjustment is simple to figure out, everything being attached and adjusted with cordage and lacing.
I wore these and did some drills and test cutting with my own swords, and the armored sleeves DID NOT hinder me in any way.
Not only are these stylish, but VERY functional for the modern warrior.
