Cotton Yugake (also spelled as Yukake), are traditional Japanese gloves commonly worn by samurai warrior class. The yukake were of course worn for fashion and warmth, but samurai would also wear gloves under their armor for added protection. The gloves were thin and often unlined so the samurai could retain maximum sensitivity while handling their weapon. Traditionally, the samurai would don the right glove first, breaking with the tradition of dressing left to right. This is because the ability of the right hand (sword / bow hand) made it more easy to tie the cords of the left hand. Leather Egawa Yukake are also available.
Our traditional cotton Yugake are handmade using fine Japanese cotton linen with optional printed designs. Our samurai gloves feature a traditional cloth wrist strap for a secure, no slip fit. We also offer standard or custom glove sizing. These Japanese gloves are great for professional martial artists and modern warriors, wanting to wear gloves to prevent sweat from getting on their katana tsuka-ito, yari or any weapon, while not losing sensitivity. They are also great for historical re-enactors, LARP, Cosplay, adding traditional Japanese style to modern clothing or a unique gift for lovers of Japanese culture. Please read the “Ordering Tips” below. Our samurai clothing and accessories are featured in many movies, tv series, documentaries, including the docudrama “Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan” by Netflix & the Smithsonian Channel. Ordering Tips: Linen does not stretch and can shrink when washed. We recommend ordering your cotton yugake 1 size larger to ensure a better fit. Or you can select the stretchable poly-cotton option if you’re not sure. Because hand sizes and shapes differ we offer custom sizing for a small fee. Because this is a handmade item, sizing may differ slightly. We can not guarantee a perfect fit but will certainly try.
