Hanten is a reversible, lightweight, short padded winter coat, which were worn by Daimyo, Samurai and farmers alike. These cozy coats would be worn by samurai around the village or around the campfire while on patroles and military campaigns. Although the hanten was used throughout the centuries in ancient Japan, they became very common as formal and casual winter coat. Because they are reversible (you can wear it inside out), the outside and inside lining of the coat would typically be of 2 different colors. With this they could be worn to match different kimono, for different occasions or one side in the rain and other in the sun. This way one side of the jacket always remains clean and fresh looking. Today hanten are used by modern warriors and commoners alike. Around the campfire, the house or around town, these coats are comfortable and fashionable.
Keeping with Japanese tradition, our Iron Mountain Armory hanten are made from linen (due to the fabrics’ strength), with the option to upgrade to art. silk for Daimyo or Samurai wanting to show their stately status. Our hanten winter coat or the haseil summer jacket, are the perfect addition to complete your traditional Japanese clothing set, especially for historical re-enactors. Our seamstress at the Iron Mountain Armory will honor you like the samurai of old, being happy to hand make your very own custom hanten winter coat using the colors you select, while offering the option to add your own embroidered mon (symbol) or name to the outside and inside chest. We also offer the option of adding pockets to the outside and inside of your winter coat. You will love your new custom, stylish, traditional Japanese winter coat!
This product is unisex and can be worn by both men and women and should fit any body type down to your upper hips.
