    Extra Design Options

    Gashira (Officer):
Expertly handmade with quality materials and good attention to detail.

Crafting Time: 25 to 35 Days.

Materials Used: Bowl style kabuto, steel construction, traditional brocade, hemp, quality cotton, brass, copper fittings with genuine leather & and some synthetic materials might be used. (materials may differ depending on model)

Our “Gashira Class” yoroi are the next step up from our “Kachi Class.” Each suit is handcrafted by our experienced katchû-shi (armor smith) at the Iron Mountain Armory. Our craftsman will use quality materials and traditional crafting methods with some modern techniques, tools and advancements in design. Much like the Taisho Class, each suit has been heavily researched, and a lot of care is put into their historical accuracy. The principle difference between the Gashira-class and Taisho-class, is that the Gashira Class is crafted with the practical bowl-style kabuto (simulated laminate) and some other machine stamped parts. Gashira class also feature some small modern design enhancements (like adding grommets and spot welding) to make the armor more robust and easier to main. Our Gashira Class samurai armor is made specifically for collectors, exhibitions, re-enactors and martial artists, who want an authentic “Gendai” samurai suit of armor without the added expenses of the more traditional design and hand crafting methods found in our Taisho class.

The Gashira class features a more traditional Gendai design over kachi class and include features such as, real animal hair, genuine leather, removable or interchangeable nose, brass fittings, shoulder padding with kikko (armor plating), traditional butted mail, opposable thumbs, leg / waist support on haidate, extra materials, fittings, riveting, grommets, extra lacing options and included armor storage / display box (yoroi bitsu) with stand. The attention to detail is a big step up from Kachi class, however, due to handcrafting of many parts there might be some blemishes that pass through our QC process. Although we work to avoid and fix blemishes / issues, through the QC process, they are a natural occurrence of handcrafting. Taisho class suits will have fewer (if any) of these blemishes that occur due to high standards and level of detail when crafting and review.

Description

Kiritsuke Kozane Okegawa (narrow scale 2 piece cuirass armor) is a fantastic replica of a kiritsuke kozane kebiki-odoshi okegawa tosei samurai armor set, style of lamellae style armor, commonly used amongst high-ranking samurai warriors and Daimyo of the mid 16th century. It continued to be used into the late Edo Era. The suji-bachi kabuto (laminated helmet) style is adorned with a high standing maedate (crest) that can be customized to your request of samurai clan mon (symbol) or your own family or business logo.  This The chest plate style of Kiritsuke-Kozane was a new and more economical version “hon kozane” (true scale), which were individual narrow scale plates laced together, giving a flexible style of armor that could wrap around the warrior.  The kiritsuke-Kozane simulates the look of kozane but is made from long, broad strips (ita-mono) of iron or steel plates, known as “sane-ita”, or “itazane”, laced together in kebiki-odoshi style lacing (also referred to as “full lacing”),  which is the same fashion of traditional kozane, giving the same look without the extra cost (typically triple the price).  This also made the armor easier to maintain and more durable in combat.  The full name for this particular do is: “Kiritsuke Kozane Kebiki Odoshi Gendai Okegawa Ni-Mai-Do”.

This samurai armor is crafted in a Kiritsuke-Kozane Okegawa Do Gusoku which means “two-section clam-shell cuirass armor, made of lamellae, imitating classical kozane“.  The Do (breastplate) is made from 14 individual simulated scaled plates of steel, each hand-woven together with art. silk lacing. Crafting time takes over 100 hours.  The matching O-Sode (as seen large shoulder shields) or options Chu-sode (smaller, standard sized shoulder shields) can be laced using the color pattern or design of your choice.  The metal edges of the armor can be decorated with brass trim, called “fukurin”, adding an extra touch of embellishment.  The colored lacing gives the armor a beautiful, vibrant and classical appearance. As with all of our Taisho Class samurai armor, the Odoshi Scale Gusoku is handmade by the highest skilled katchû-shi (Japanese armor smith) here at Iron Mountain Armory with great care and attention to detail.

Please Note:  Select to receive a mockup to be sure the lacing pattern is exactly as you want.  We will email you to confirm your lace color combination to make certain we craft your samurai armor as you envision.
