Manju-Wa (Manju no wa) is an auxiliary armor often worn under the Do (Samurai cuirass) as a removable / replaceable under armor. The manju-wa provided a flexible mail or kikko plating (brigandine) style of armor for added protection for the upper torso, neck, shoulders and under armpit, without impeding the samurai’s movement. Because it was separate from the Do, it could be replaced quickly and easily if it needed to be repaired, without requiring the entire Do to be sent back for servicing at the same time, if not needed.
The manju-wa was a common auxiliary armor pre 1570 (Sengoku Period), before the Tate-Eri became more common. Iron Mountain Armory handcrafts their Manju-Wa with kikko plating laced within to offer superior protection without sacrificing mobility or comfort. It can be worn under any Do for added protection, more comfortable if the tate-eri (shoulder padding in the Do) is removed. Perfect for any Budo Martial Artist wanting to add some traditional armor to their training. Words great for SCA, LARP and re-enactors wanting traditional samurai armor.
