Menpo (or men yoroi), is the term for various types of facial armor worn by the samurai class and their retainers in Feudal Japan. This Gashira Class menpo is a copy of an original, which features a kuchi hige (mustache), shiwa (facial wrinkles), odayori ore kugi (posts), hana (detachable nose guard) , mimi (ear covers) and tare (throat guard). This style of menpo is the standard option for all of our Gashira Samurai Armor Sets and Gashira Kabuto. Samurai Mask.
History: The menpo, was traditionally used not only to protect the face in battle, but to help hold the cords of the kabuto (helmet) to the warrior’s head, while providing protection from the shinobi-no-o (kabuto rope). The typically shinobi–no-o would tie around the ore kugi (L shaped post), located on the menpo cheeks and then down under the chin. The menpo could have a cord, which tied over the crown of the warriors head, and/or could be tied to the shinobi-no-o, to be secured to the samurai warrior’s face.
Our menpo, like all of our armor, are full sized and functional. It can fit your existing kabuto, or looks great displayed by itself with one of our Menpo Display Stands. Wear for re-enactment or as part of a costume, SCA, LARP, Cosplay or collection.

Awesome shiny and just plain badass
Excellent upgrade to my Kachi class armor – the detachable nose piece fits and removes wonderfully by spring type action. My order was slightly delayed due to the heavy rains at the armory, but Michael not only kept me abreast of the timeline, but included a bonus piece as well as upgraded my shipping. Thanks again to the great folks at Iron Mountain Armory. I look forward to seeing more items which I will “have” to acquire! 🙂 Dean M.
Expensive but worth it. I first purchased a similar mask on ebay for $100 and it was OK. This mask twice the value at just half the price more. It really feels solid and well made. Mustache and cord are great quality and worth the extra expense themselves.
I got this Mempo in Gloss Black and Black lace, with no lips or mustache. Its super clean, great flex to it but very durable. The neck piece when worn performs perfectly in an accordion-like action. The nose piece comes out nice and easy with a gentle squeeze against the cheek bones..and goes back on with the same ease. I can look around and feel secure quite comfortably. There are 5 small holes on each top corner to add more lace. It comes with one sturdy lace for display and wear. I put in 2 of my black shoe laces to add extra support. I would wear an additional bandanna under neath the chin and perhaps a heavy top knot against the two front lace anchors to complete the feel and look. I wore it perfectly with my Combat helmet and ballistic goggles..Modern Samurai completed! Thank you very much! I will buy again!
