The Sarashi (belt, or torso wrap) has a rich history rooted in the traditions of samurai armor. Traditionally, the Sarashi was worn around the waist to secure the Do (cuirass), the main body armor of the samurai. By firmly holding the Do in place, the Sarashi allowed the weight to rest on the warrior’s waist, lifting the watagami (shoulder straps) slightly above the shoulders. This design relieved the shoulders from bearing the full weight of the armor, enabling samurai to wear their armor comfortably for extended periods without experiencing fatigue.
In addition to its primary function, the Sarashi served multiple purposes on the battlefield. It could be used as a makeshift bandage for wounds or to carry small items such as a tanto (samurai knife) across the stomach. Female samurai also utilized the Sarashi to bind their breasts, making it easier and more comfortable to don their armor.
In modern times, the Sarashi has transcended its original martial use and is now popularly used as a body wrap. It is often employed in traditional Japanese festivals, martial arts training, and even in fashion. The Sarashi continues to be valued for its ability to provide support and stability, maintaining its place as a versatile and enduring element of Japanese culture.
Today, the Sarashi is available in various colors and materials, allowing for customization to match personal preferences or traditional attire. Whether for historical reenactments, martial arts, or modern fashion, the Sarashi remains an iconic symbol of Japanese heritage.
To complete your samurai warrior kit, a Yoroi Obi (padded armor belt), Sarashi and Uwa-Obi (outer thin utility belt) are crucial to have. The Yoroi Obi cushions the weight of the Do on the waist, protecting the hips and preventing chafing. The Uwa-Obi, a thin utility belt, is used to secure additional items such as the katana, wakizashi, Samurai Clan Asa Kinchaku (Hemp Bag), Suitou (Gourd Canteen), extra waraji (sandals), hayago-doran (ammo pouch) and other samurai accessories.
Sarashi belts should wrap around your waist or armor 4 times, starting from the front and finishing in the front. Order based on your actual waist circumference, and we will make your sarashi to the correct length for you. Your sarashi will be crafted to be +4x the length of the circumference of your waist. If you are between lengths/sizes, please order the next length/size up to ensure the best and most secure fit.
Our Sarashi belts are handcrafted by Iron Mountain Armory and are featured in various movies, TV series, and documentaries, including Netflix & Smithsonian Channel’s “Age of Samurai: Battle for Japan.” Please allow 1 to 2 weeks for crafting this item.
