Description

Waki Biki Yoroi are optional under-armor pieces worn by samurai during Feudal Japan in addition to sangu (the basic three extremity armor components).  This protective auxiliary piece was often crafted with kusari (chain armor), karuta (small rectangular or square plates) or kikko (hexagon plates), that protected the gap between the Do, and the armpit of the samurai, when the arms were lifted.  This space was originally left open to not impede the movement of the samurai’s arms in combat but was soon found to be extremely  vulnerable.

As a result, this soft tatami style of armor was developed to protect the area without impeding arm movement. The waki-biki is held in place by utilizing two loops at the top and bottom sides, or cords which would tie the armor in place over the shoulder and around the chest.  The Do would then be placed over the top, securing in under this armor and holding it in place. Iron Mountain Armory crafted waki-ita are made from several karuta linked together with chain-mail over a strong, natural linen.
