Yoroi Obi is a padded belt made to be worn under the do (cuirass) of your samurai armor and can be used over the samurai armor while on display. The principle purpose for this particular obi is to act as a “bolster” like pillow, which will help absorb the weight and pressure of the do, as it rests upon your hips. The sarashi obi is a linen belt, which is used the hold the do to your waist, squeezing it firmly against the yoroi obi. These two obi (belt / sash) work together to properly secure the samurai cuirass to prevent it from hindering the warriors movements. As said before the yoroi obi can also be displayed around the waist of the samurai armor while it is on display, but isn’t a “standard” for properly displaying samurai armor.
Iron Mountain Armory offers 2 styles of the padded yoroi obi. The 1st is the round yoroi obi which is commonly seen with most antique samurai armor sets. The round obi became more common in the Edo (peaceful) Era, when armor was worn more on occasion or parade and looks best while displaying your armor, which is why it comes included with our armor sets. The 2nd is the large padded yoroi obi which is basically much larger version of the standard yoroi obi, offering more comfort and protection while wearing under the do. The large obi was more common during the Sengoku (warring state) Era, as samurai wore their armor for longer periods of time while on campaign. If you plan to be wearing your armor, especially for training, we recommend ordering the large yoroi obi for the extra comfort and protection it will provide you. Asa (hemp) is the prefer material as it is more durable then the art. silk brocades and neither will be seen under the armor, however both will serve you well.
Tips for ordering: The obi should match the circumference of your waist or desired length you want. Please know that WE will add an additional 35 cm to the length you request.
