Fudo Tosei Taisho Yoroi samurai armor is hand crafted by our artisan Taisho katchû-shi (Japanese armor smiths). This traditional tosei style okegawa yoroi in crafted with in honor of the Buddhist Samurai who prayed to Fudo Myo-o. The maedate (crest) features the bonji of Fudo Myo-o over the burning flame symbolizing the purifying fire which destroys karmic hindrances. According to Japanese mythology, he was the fierce form of the Buddha Vairocana, and the most important of the Myo-o, the warlike and wrathful deities. The 5 piece, handcrafted Hineno Zunari Bachi kabuto (helmet) has a prominent maedate (crest) and bears the Sanskrit name to invoke Dainichi Nyorai (Enjō-ji) “The Great Sun”. These flames of fire-represent the purification of one’s mind by burning away all material desires.
Keeping with taisho crafting tradition this Fudo Myo-o samurai yoroi is fully handcrafted with a tosei okegawa do (chest armor) and Bishamon suneate (shin guards) and completed with the Fudo Myo-o Sanskrit maedate. This particular yoroi features a traditionally crafted 3 plate Hineno Zunari Bachi Kabuto (helmet), with Kiritsuke Iyozane (simulated scale) shikoro (neck-plate), sode (shoulder guards) and kusazari (defensive skirt plating). This tosei design style was very common in the late Muromachi – Sengoku period. Like all of our suits, our Taisho katchû-shi are happy to customize the style of kabuto, menpo (mask) and suneate (shin guards), as well as odoshi (paint color and finish).
