Gashira Momonari Samurai Armor is a tosei (post 1550) gusoku (matching armor set) as it crafted with the momonari kabuto (peach shaped helmet) and ni-mai yokohagi okegawa do (2 piece tube-sided with hinge). This style of armor armor became popular after Europeans arrived to the shores of Japan, bringing with them the tanegashima teppo (match lock rifle). The momonari kabuto was inspired by the European helmets during the Momoyama era (1575 – 1615). The samurai appreciated the new design as it helped deflect the bullets fired from the teppo muskets. The tosei style do (cuirass / chest armor) was crafted from ito-mono (armor strip plates) riveted together, which provided superior protection then the older style of yoroi (armor).
